I distinctly remember when the first Five-Minute Veterinary Consult was published. I was in my last year of veterinary school and my internal medicine professor at the time held the text high above his head and proclaimed, “I generally dislike cookbooks, but I like this one!” Since then, I have come to admire this series and refer to these books daily.
The Canine and Feline Behavior Clinical Companion is arranged in typical Five-Minute consult fashion with the chapters in alphabetical order, followed by appendices and a comprehensive index. Each of the 64 chapters consists of a definition/overview of the problem, followed by etiology/pathophysiology, signalment/history, differential diagnoses, diagnostics, therapeutics and comments; all in bullet format. Each chapter ends with suggested readings for more in-depth information. Subdivided, the signalment/history section of each chapter lists expected historical findings, contributing/risk factors, and what historical questions that you, as the clinician, should be asking. Each therapeutics section covers owner and pet safety issues, management, behavioral modification techniques, a list of accompanying handouts, other treatments, contraindications/precautions, and surgical considerations. The comments sections include client education, patient monitoring, prevention/avoidance, possible complications, expected course and prognoses, other chapters within the text to refer to, and definitions of the abbreviations used. Following the chapters are 4 appendices. The 1st is “Pharmacology,” which includes a formulary. The 2nd is a quick and dirty introduction to classical behavior theory titled: “Learning and Behavior Modification.” Part of the 3rd appendix, “Additional Resources for Veterinarians,” is a helpful general history form which can be reproduced without written permission. The last appendix is a series of client handouts meant to help the client understand and follow your diagnosis and recommendations. For ease of printing, a computer disk containing the handouts has been included on the inside back cover of the book.

And I tried to buy your pretty heart But the price is too high Baby, you got me like, oh You love when I fall apart (Fall apart) So you can put me together And throw me against the wall Baby, you got me like, ah, woo, ah Don't you stop loving me (loving me) Don't quit loving me (loving me) Just start loving me (loving me) Oh, and babe, I’m fist fighting with fire Just to get close to you Can we burn something, babe? Twenty-four of the 64 chapters deal with aggression issues. Virtually every relatively common behavior problem of the dog and cat encountered by the general practitioner is covered in the text. As stated in the preface, the book doesn’t go into depth with regards to theory or background behind any given problem, but is meant to be a quick, easily accessible source of information. At this it succeeds admirably.
On the plus side, this book includes a number of good photos and truly gives a quick, yet thorough overview of behavior problems. It definitely helps get the general practitioner started in the right direction towards diagnosing and treating the often complicated and frustrating behavior cases we encounter. I especially like the client handouts and the drug/medication information which isn’t generally covered in nonveterinary behavior books.
On the down side, as I was reading the text, I came across suggestions for treatment options such as the “Cat Bib,” with no real explanation for the device. An appendix of these items, with their explanations and a source of where to obtain them, would have been useful.
Behavior is an inexact science. Behaviorists and behavior theories abound. The efficacy of many techniques or training ideas found in the myriad of books available on the subject are mostly anecdotal and often our advice, as veterinarians, is based on what we have found to work for us in the past. This text is grounded in the classical theory of behavior we learned in school; other “theories” exist. As a personal example, I like to discuss many behavioral problems of dogs with respect to “pack theory” (no hate mail please). I find it makes sense to owners and once owners apply themselves as “pack leader,” many issues are resolved or lessoned. This text incorporates some of these ideas in the handout, “Structuring Your Relationship with Your Pet,” without actually using the word dominance. As a result, I find myself combining information from this text with information from other sources when formulating what I believe to be the best treatment plan for my patient.
Would I recommend this text as an addition to a clinic library? Absolutely. As a quick reference and a great synopsis of behavioral problems, it’s tough to beat.
As an aside, just over 20 of the chapters in this book can be found in the lastest, 4th edition of Blackwell’s Five-Minute Veterinary Consult: Canine and Feline.
Arranged alphabetically from A-Z for efficient searching, each topic covers clinical signs, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up. The customizable Client Handouts, which have been fully updated and redesigned with an attractive color design, are now available online, along with an image and video bank. Whether you're a student or a practicing veterinarian, this bestselling reference book will cut down on time spent navigating through other resources, allowing you to study, diagnose and treat more quickly.
